This restoration project required us to make several changes to the facade and roof of the building, including stripping the roof of damaged and broken Kent peg tiles and replacing them with new, handmade clay Kent pegs. To improve the natural light levels in the building, we installed five conservation standard roof lights; we then stripped the building’s existing dormer of its bitumen covering and tile-hung cheeks; the team also created a new dormer. The old and the new dormers are now finished with lead cheeks and a lead covering.

The window over the mill was a letterbox-style small window, which provided our clients with little or no light. We pinned up the ragstone wall to remedy this; we created a bigger opening and installed a larger oak sliding sash window.

On the back of the building adjacent to the waterfall, we removed an old brick-retaining wall from the existing Garden Room and installed a new direct-glazed oak frame front. This, in turn, created extra light and a beautiful design feature.

Our team also installed new bi-fold garage doors. This required us to create a new load-bearing cill above the garage doors to accommodate the additional weight. We then refurbished the existing Veranda above the building’s front door, adding hardwood newel posts and handrails and replacing the existing decking with a long-life composite material; we also repaired the current oak cantilever floor supports.

Internally, we renovated the existing loft into a small office with a slate floor and new underfloor heating. This also involved altering the building’s internal drainage to incorporate a toilet.
